The Yak-3 was arguably the finest Soviet fighter of the Second World War at low and medium altitudes — lighter than the Spitfire, faster below 13,000 feet than anything the Luftwaffe could field in 1944. It entered service that year after Yakovlev stripped the earlier Yak-1M down to its essentials, removing the wing-mounted cannon and shaving weight wherever possible. The French Normandie-Niémen volunteer regiment flew it with particular distinction, and at war's end Stalin permitted them to take their aircraft home to France — one of the few times Soviet military hardware was gifted to a Western nation.
