The composition depicts the Virgin Mary swooning as she cradles the limp, pallid body of Christ, surrounded by grieving figures including Saint John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene, and other mourners, all rendered with Botticelli's characteristic sinuous line and rich drapery in deep reds, blues, and blacks. The scene is enclosed within a finely detailed ornamental gilt frame in Baroque style, with acanthus-scroll and bead-and-reel motifs, occupying the full extent of the square flan.
