The composition depicts the Virgin Mary swooning as she cradles the limp, pallid body of Christ, surrounded by grieving figures including Saint John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene, and other mourners, all rendered with Botticelli's characteristic sinuous line and rich drapery in deep reds, blues, and blacks.
