The Kangxi Emperor's early reign saw a brief but significant monetary experiment: between 1667 and 1670, both the Board of Revenue and Board of Works mints in Beijing struck cash coins in brass rather than the copper-zinc alloy that dominated Qing coinage before and after. The switch was short-lived, abandoned once the metallurgical and supply complications outweighed any advantage. Coins from this window are consequently restricted to a narrow production period of roughly three years.
The Giyang / Jiang mint designation places this piece among a provincially-marked subset of the Beijing issues, a detail that continues to generate classification debate among specialists working from Hartill and Schjoth.
