The Gepids occupied Sirmium — a former imperial capital of enormous strategic weight — after the collapse of Hunnic power in the mid-fifth century, and this fraction belongs to the peculiar numismatic habit of barbarian rulers producing coinage in the name of the reigning eastern emperor while exercising de facto independence. Theoderic is paired here with Justinian, a combination that postdates Theoderic's death in 526, suggesting the die pairing was either prepared in anticipation of the transition or continued in use after it.

Justinian ultimately retook Sirmium in 567 through the Avars, ending Gepid coinage production entirely.
