| Obverse description | Light blue letterpress print on white newsprint. The issuer's title, 汤阴县粮食局粗粮券, is set in bold Chinese characters across the upper field, with the denomination expressed in three parallel forms — 1市斤 (upper left), 500克(g) (upper right), and 半公斤(kg) in large characters at centre — flanked by two vertical columnar cartouches bearing cautionary legends (县外无效 and 遗失不补). A central vignette of a stylised gourd or pumpkin with corn motifs in light blue underprint occupies the middle ground, with a decorative scrollwork border band running along the lower register. |

| Reverse description | Plain white newsprint reverse printed entirely in black letterpress with three numbered clauses under the bold heading 说明 (Instructions). The text is set in standard simplified Chinese characters with no decorative elements, vignettes, or border devices, giving the reverse a purely utilitarian appearance consistent with local county-issued ration coupons of the period. |

Chinese county-level grain bureaus issued ration coupons in parallel with the national food rationing system administered by the Ministry of Grain, but local coupons like this one operated within a tightly bounded geography — valid only within Tangyin County and redeemable solely through designated state grain stations. Coarse grain categories (粗粮) were administratively distinct from fine grain allocations, covering maize, sorghum, millet, and similar staples, and were typically priced lower under the dual-track system still in force in 1986.
Newsprint as a substrate reflects production economics at the county level, where bureaus had no access to security printing facilities. These coupons were never meant to outlast their redemption window.
