Obverse description Bare male head facing right, rendered in the Ibero-Hellenistic style with elaborate curled hair arranged in voluted locks above the forehead and cascading behind the neck. A dolphin appears before the face, and a second symbol, possibly an Iberian letter or control mark, is visible below the chin. The portraiture exhibits the strong, idealized features characteristic of Celtiberian coinage of the late 2nd century BC, set within a plain border.

Additional information

Erkauika was a pre-Roman Iberian city whose precise location remains disputed, though most scholarship places it somewhere in the Ebro valley region. These bronzes were struck during a period when indigenous Iberian communities retained limited autonomous minting rights under Roman provincial administration following the Gracchan reorganization of Hispania Citerior. The city disappears from the numismatic record entirely by the early first century BC, almost certainly absorbed into the broader Roman municipal framework as colonial consolidation tightened.
