By 1766, Gdańsk retained its extraordinary status as a semi-autonomous city operating its own mint under Polish suzerainty — a privilege fiercely defended through decades of negotiation. Poniatowski's monetary reform of 1765–66 was among the most ambitious in Polish history, attempting to rationalize a chaotic coinage system debased by decades of foreign imitation and wartime disruption. The trojak, a three-groszy piece with medieval roots, was drawn into this modernized framework almost as a concession to tradition.
