Beschrijving keerzijde Two confronted goat heads facing one another within a deeply struck incuse square, a device characteristic of early Greek coining technique. The heads are rendered in moderate relief within the sunken square, their muzzles nearly touching at the center of the die. The incuse square format reflects archaic Greek minting tradition, with the goat imagery serving as a civic emblem of the Delphic mint.

Aanvullende informatie

Delphi's independent coinage reflects the sanctuary's unusual political status — the city functioned less as a conventional polis than as a Panhellenic religious center administered by the Amphictyonic League, giving it the authority to strike its own silver despite limited civic infrastructure. Production was almost certainly tied to the sanctuary economy: festival fees, dedications converted to specie, and the enormous volume of exchange surrounding the Pythian Games every four years.

The trihemiobol denomination — one and a half obols — served small transactions at the sanctuary precinct level.
