| Beschrijving voorzijde | Highly stylized and degenerate bust facing right, rendered in the debased Merovingian manner with schematic facial features and a hatched or striated diadem or helmet. The portrait is crudely executed in low relief, reflecting the late antique artistic tradition as filtered through Frankish workshop practice. A circular legend in Latin surrounds the effigy in the field, referencing the mint city of Verdun. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hand-struck Merovingian gold coinage of the mid-seventh century. |
