| Descrição do anverso | Central field bearing the crowned Portuguese royal arms: a shield of quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) enclosed within a bordure of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark 'L' for Lisboa appears to the right of the shield within the inner circle. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular legend, which reads: + IOHANES 3 R P ET A D GVINE, identifying the issuer as João III, King of Portugal and the Algarves, Lord of Guinea. The coin is struck by hand, resulting in a slightly irregular flan with characteristic hammered surface texture. |
