| Reverse description | Central field displaying a large bold cross of Portugal with expanded, flared terminals, set within a plain inner circle. The arms of the cross extend nearly to the inner border, dominating the reverse design. A beaded inner border frames the cross, beyond which the circular legend reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (rendered with Cyrillic-style reversed 'N': IИ HOC SIGИO VIИCES), the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign you will conquer.' Two small star ornaments serve as separators within the legend. The hammered strike imparts slight unevenness to the flan, consistent with early sixteenth-century Portuguese minting practice. |
