| Descrizione del dritto | Central field bearing the crowned Portuguese royal arms: a shield of quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) enclosed within a bordure of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark 'L' for Lisboa appears to the right of the shield within the inner circle. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular legend, which reads: + IOHANES 3 R P ET A D GVINE, identifying the issuer as João III, King of Portugal and the Algarves, Lord of Guinea. The coin is struck by hand, resulting in a slightly irregular flan with characteristic hammered surface texture. |

The arms of the cross extend nearly to the inner border, dominating the reverse design. A beaded inner border frames the cross, beyond which the circular legend reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (rendered with Cyrillic-style reversed 'N': IИ HOC SIGИO VIИCES), the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign you will conquer.' Two small star ornaments serve as separators within the legend. The hammered strike imparts slight unevenness to the flan, consistent with early sixteenth-century Portuguese minting practice. |
