Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Crispus facing right, rendered in a debased late antique style characteristic of early Anglo-Saxon coinage. A Latin cross with annulet terminals at each arm occupies the central field, flanked by the letters X X to either side, all enclosed within a wreath border. The surrounding legend incorporates both Runic and Latin letterforms, reflecting the hybrid epigraphic tradition of the early Anglo-Saxon monetary series. Uncertain ornamental devices appear above and below the central cross motif. The overall composition derives from late Roman and Merovingian monetary prototypes, adapted by insular die-cutters of the mid-seventh century. |
