Strato I ruled the eastern remnants of the Indo-Greek kingdom at a moment when Baktrian power was already fragmenting under Saka and Parthian pressure from the northwest. He almost certainly co-ruled for part of his reign with his mother Agathokleia as regent, a dynastic arrangement reflected in bilingual coinage struck in both Greek and Kharoshthi — making these tetradrachms among the earliest coins produced for an Indian-literate audience by a Hellenistic ruler.
The Bopearachchi sequence places this type firmly within the Taxila mint sphere.
