Beschrijving keerzijde Zeus Aëtophoros enthroned left on a high-backed throne, his body nude to the waist with a himation draped over his lower half. In his extended right hand he holds an eagle, while his left hand grasps a long sceptre. To the upper left of the throne, the monogram ΠΑΥ appears above a Macedonian helmet; below the throne, the secondary control monogram ΠΥ is inscribed. The legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ runs along the right and upper fields, identifying the coin as issued in the name of King Alexander.

Aanvullende informatie

Mesembria, a Greek colonial city on the Black Sea coast of Thrace, struck posthumous Alexanders well into the first century BC — long after the practice had peaked across the Aegean world. By this point the type had become essentially a trade currency, trusted across the Pontic region precisely because of its familiarity. The city's issues are distinguished by their own control marks, and Price 1106 is attributable by a specific combination of monograms that place production squarely within the Mesembrian municipal series rather than any Macedonian royal authority.
