In his extended right hand he holds an eagle, and in his raised left hand a long sceptre. The Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ runs along the right field. In the left field, a monogram appears above a sphinx seated right, the latter serving as the civic symbol of the mint at Chios and providing a key attribution for this issue. |

Chios was a prolific issuing center for posthumous Alexandrine tetradrachms, operating under the autonomous arrangements that allowed many Aegean island mints to strike in Alexander's name long after his death in 323 BC. By the late third and early second centuries, these issues served the intensive commercial traffic of the eastern Aegean rather than any Macedonian political program. Price 2395 is distinguished by its specific magistrate control marks, which allow attribution to Chios against the broader mass of posthumous production from Asia Minor and the islands.
