Abydos, positioned at the narrowest point of the Hellespont, was one of the most strategically critical toll-points in the ancient world — whoever controlled it taxed virtually all maritime traffic between the Aegean and the Black Sea. Posthumous Alexanders struck here fall within the chaotic generation after the king's death in 323 BC, when the Diadochi fought to control both territory and the symbolic authority that came with issuing coinage in his name.
Price 1549 is attributed to the Lysimachean period of control over the Troad, roughly coinciding with his consolidation of Thrace and northwestern Asia Minor following Ipsus in 301 BC.
