By 201 BC, the practice of striking posthumous Alexanders had become a political tool as much as a monetary one — cities across the eastern Aegean continued issuing in Alexander's name long after his death in 323 BC as a way of guaranteeing broad commercial acceptance without pledging allegiance to any of the competing successor kingdoms. Kos was well-positioned for this: a prosperous island with deep trading connections and enough autonomy to mint on its own terms.

Price 2525 is identified by its Koan civic symbol, placing it firmly within a small regional group. The island's mint output was modest compared to the great Macedonian production centers.
