Tetradrachm - Argeios In the name of Alexander III

Chios issued posthumous Alexander tetradrachms well into the second century BC, long after the Macedonian kingdom itself had collapsed under Roman pressure at Pydna in 168 BC. The island's mint used the Alexander type as a trusted commercial currency across Aegean trade networks — its value lay precisely in the familiarity of the type, not in any political allegiance to a dead dynasty. The magistrate name Argeios places this piece within a defined sequential group identifiable through die studies, and the relatively large flan diameter is characteristic of the later Chian issues within this series.
