Tigranes II of Armenia held Commagene as a vassal territory from around 83 BC until his defeat by Lucullus at Tigranocerta in 69 BC, after which the region entered a prolonged period of contested authority. These imitative tetradrachms — modeled on Seleucid types of Antiochus I rather than anything contemporary — reflect the political ambiguity of a buffer state caught between the retreating Armenian sphere and encroaching Roman influence. The choice to imitate a dynasty two centuries dead was almost certainly a calculated legitimizing gesture by local dynasts asserting continuity with earlier Hellenistic authority.
