Celtic tribes across the Danube basin began producing imitative tetradrachms of Alexander III sometime in the late 4th century BC, initially copying Macedonian prototypes with reasonable fidelity before progressively abstracting the designs through successive die generations. What survives is effectively a visual record of transmission — each workshop copying not the original coin but the previous copy, with accumulated distortions that allow specialists to reconstruct approximate geographic and chronological sequences. The "Uncertain Eastern European" attribution reflects genuine scholarly disagreement; these pieces circulated widely enough that provenance alone rarely settles the question of origin.
