Peparethos, the island now known as Skopelos, was one of the Aegean's significant wine-producing territories in the archaic period, and its early coinage reflects an autonomous civic identity that would be increasingly squeezed by Macedonian expansion in the fourth century. Issues of this weight and period predate that pressure considerably, placing this piece among the earlier assertions of Peparethian monetary independence.
