The surrounding marginal field carries a circular Arabic inscription in smaller script, enclosed within a beaded or dotted border. The calligraphy is rendered in the characteristic Ottoman tughra-influenced style typical of Sultani gold coinage struck in North African mints. Ibrahim I's regency coinage from Tripoli occupies an awkward moment in Ottoman provincial administration — his reign in Constantinople (1640–1648) was marked by such erratic governance that contemporaries and later Ottoman historians alike questioned his mental competence, and he was eventually deposed and strangled. Provincial mints like Tripoli operated with considerable autonomy during periods of central instability, and the relatively short window for this issue keeps surviving examples genuinely scarce.
