The horses are rendered in fine archaic style with carefully delineated musculature. The magistrate inscription ΦΕΙΔΩΝΟΣ (of Pheidon) appears in the field, identifying this issue with the eponymous official. The composition fills the flan with dynamic energy characteristic of Kyrenaean coinage of the late fourth century BC. |

The city ethnic ΚΥΡΑΝΑΙΟΝ is inscribed in the field, identifying the issuing authority. The reverse type reflects the paramount religious and civic importance of Apollo as the divine patron of Kyrene, rendered in a dignified, classicising style. |
