The Opuntian Lokrians occupied a strategically awkward position in fourth-century Greek politics — nominally subordinate to Thebes after Leuktra in 371 BC yet maintaining enough civic independence to produce their own silver coinage through the 350s. This stater belongs to that uneasy interval, struck while Epaminondas was reshaping central Greek power and the Lokrians were carefully managing obligations to multiple stronger neighbors.

The BCD Lokris reference places this among a well-documented but genuinely scarce series; the Copenhagen and SNG groupings confirm die-linked survival patterns suggesting limited original production runs rather than a heavily circulated civic issue.
