| Obverse description | Europa seated upon a bull facing right, her nude torso rendered with archaic vitality, grasping the bull's horn with her right hand and holding a sceptre or staff in her left; the bull advances to the right with its head turned back toward the rider, its body coiling downward in a dynamic composition filling the flan. The ethnic legend ITANIΩN is disposed around the field in retrograde or direct Greek characters. The style is characteristic of Cretan coinage of the early Classical period, with bold, high-relief modeling. |
