In February 2025, a commemorative 10,000 Burundian franc banknote will be introduced, officially recognized as the largest modern banknote in the world. It surpasses the previous record-holder, Malaysia’s 600-ringgit banknote from 2017, which measured 370 × 220 mm. The new Burundian banknote is 42% larger, with impressive dimensions of 400 × 288 mm.
The banknote was issued by the Bank of the Republic of Burundi (Banque de la République du Burundi, BRB) and produced by the German company Mietens & Partner GmbH. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which was celebrated in March 2023. This commemorative note serves as a symbol of the effort to protect biodiversity.
