Herakleia Pontika was a Milesian colony on the Black Sea coast that maintained unusual political independence through much of the fourth century, governed for a period under the tyranny of Klearchos and later his sons — a dynastic arrangement that overlapped precisely with this issue's production window. The city's silver coinage was struck to the Sinopean standard, reflecting its mercantile orbit around Pontic trade routes rather than Aegean ones.
