A nude male figure, likely a youth or athlete, shown in dynamic pose astride or wrestling with a lion, rendered in high relief in the characteristic Kyzikene artistic style. The muscular figure is depicted in left-facing profile, with vigorous, naturalistic modeling typical of late Archaic to early Classical Greek craftsmanship. The design fills the broadly circular flan, which bears the characteristic irregular, lumpy surface associated with Kyzikene electrum coinage. No legend or inscription appears in the field. The overall composition exhibits the bold, confident engraving characteristic of fifth-century BC Kyzikos mint production. |

Kyzikos, the Propontic city that dominated electrum coinage production from roughly the sixth through fourth centuries BC, issued staters in a bewildering variety of types — estimates run to several hundred distinct obverse designs. The city's electrum came largely from Lydian trade networks, and Kyzikene staters circulated as a de facto international currency across the Greek world, accepted well beyond any single polis's political reach.
The H&L I#9a reference places this among the earliest documented Kyzikene types. Hoards from the Black Sea region have yielded the highest concentrations of these early issues.
