Elis controlled the sanctuary at Olympia and held the exclusive right to strike coinage for the quadrennial games — coins issued not as everyday currency but as prestige objects tied directly to each celebration. The 110th Olympiad fell in 340 BC, the same year Philip II of Macedon was consolidating his grip on Greece and would soon be elected hegemon of the Hellenic League. Whether athletes or visitors brought these staters home as souvenirs or exchanged them for goods at the festival, few saw prolonged circulation.
