Pulcheria was fifteen years old when she was declared Augusta in July 414 and assumed the regency for her younger brother Theodosius II. The SALVS REIPVBLICAE reverse type — "salvation of the republic" — was a deliberate political statement issued under her direct authority, framing her regency not as a temporary arrangement but as a stabilizing force for the Eastern court at a moment when the Western empire was fracturing under Visigothic pressure.
Her personal piety shaped the coinage iconography in ways that would echo through Byzantine numismatics for centuries. RIC X 205 is among the earliest solidi to situate a reigning Augusta so prominently within an orthodox Christian framework.
