Johann Jakob Trivulzio acquired the Val Mesolcina — including the seigneury of Mesocco — in 1480, and his lordship there was always secondary to his primary career as one of the most effective condottieri of the age. He commanded French forces at the Battle of Agnadello in 1509 and served Louis XII as Governor of Milan. That a man of such reach bothered issuing small billon coinage from an Alpine valley signals the political importance of projecting monetary authority even from peripheral holdings.
