To the left of the sword a hand symbol appears, and the date 1567 is displayed flanking the blade in the mid-field. The composition is characteristic of the hammered ryal series of James VI's first coinage, with the date and value serving as the primary flanking devices. A beaded inner circle frames the design, beyond which the Latin motto legend runs continuously around the periphery. |
