| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the crowned royal arms of Scotland, rendered in the hammered style characteristic of sixteenth-century Scottish coinage. To the left of the shield appears a crowned initial 'I' and to the right a crowned 'R', representing the royal cypher of Iacobus Rex. The shield is depicted with bold, angular engraving typical of the first coinage of James VI.
