João I came to the throne in 1385 through election by the Cortes of Coimbra, not hereditary succession — a dynastic rupture that required immediate legitimization on every available medium, coinage included. The short window of 1385–1387 for this issue reflects the urgency of establishing a monetary identity for the new Aviz dynasty before the currency was reformed. Évora, a major administrative center in the Alentejo, operated as one of several mints João activated quickly to saturate circulation with coins bearing his name.
The four Gomes reference numbers grouped here indicate distinct die marriages rather than separate types — a density of variety unusual for so brief a production window.
