João I's accession in 1385 followed the Battle of Aljubarrota, which ended Castilian ambitions over the Portuguese throne and installed the House of Aviz. The monetary chaos of the preceding regency and the contested succession left the coinage system badly degraded, and João moved quickly to assert royal authority through mint reform. The Lisboa issue was the dominant production center of his early reign.
The "big disk" designation distinguishes this from a thinner flan variant struck to nominally the same denomination — a practical consequence of inconsistent bullion supply and die positioning rather than any intentional change in monetary policy.
