The Sequani occupied the territory of modern Franche-Comté and were persistent rivals of the Aedui throughout the late republican period, at one point inviting Ariovistus and his Germanic forces into Gaul — a decision that accelerated the very Roman intervention that ended Gaulish independence. Their potin coinage belongs to a tradition of cast alloy issues produced across eastern and central Gaul when access to silver was inconsistent or controlled by competing tribes.
The "without neck" variant distinguishes this piece from the more common necked type, a die distinction catalogued separately as DT#3088A.
