The "Vierzipfeliger Pfennig" — four-pointed pfennig — takes its name from the characteristic irregular flan shape produced when a square-cut blank was struck between two dies, forcing the metal outward at the corners. Solothurn's civic coinage authority was producing these in the early fourteenth century as the city asserted increasing economic independence within the Burgundian frontier zone. At 0.3 g, these were working money, handled daily and rarely preserved with care.
The HMZ 1#446a attribution places this firmly within a tightly documented Swiss bracteate-adjacent tradition, with Wüthrich's collection providing the primary comparative corpus for Solothurn's early civic issues.
