Ottokar II acquired Styria through the 1260 Peace of Brünn following his decisive victory over Béla IV of Hungary at the Battle of Kressenbrunn, and these bracteate-style pfennigs were struck at Graz as part of his broader effort to consolidate monetary authority across his rapidly expanding domain. His control of Styria lasted only until 1276, when Rudolf of Habsburg's military pressure forced the Duchy's cession under the Treaty of Vienna — making the entire production window for this type a compressed sixteen years.
