Berenike II came to the Ptolemaic court through Cyprus as the wife of Demetrius the Fair, whom she reportedly had killed before marrying Ptolemy III Euergetes around 246 BC — a dynastic consolidation achieved with considerable personal initiative. Her subsequent deification and the coin issues bearing her name were part of a deliberate Ptolemaic program of ruler cult, not posthumous sentiment; she was honored during her own lifetime alongside her husband.
Gold pentadrachms of this series are rare survivors. The denomination itself was never a workhorse of daily commerce — these moved between treasuries and served elite exchange.
