Obverse description Central cross pattée with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The imperial legend is disposed around the periphery of the flan, between the beaded circle and the irregular coin edge, struck in bold Carolingian letterforms. The overall design is characteristic of the reformed Carolingian coinage introduced under Louis the Pious, exhibiting the flat, hammered fabric typical of ninth-century Frankish minting practice.
