Hugh Capet's reign opened with a dynasty, not a continuity — his election by the Frankish magnates in 987 broke the Carolingian line and installed the house that would rule France for over three centuries. Coinage from this reign is exceptionally rare in any form; the obol, half the value of a denier, survives in far smaller numbers than the principal denomination. The Beauvais mint operated under joint episcopal authority, with bishop Hervé holding co-issuing rights — an arrangement common to the period but which complicates attribution in the handful of known specimens.
