Kleitor was a minor Arkadian polis tucked into the highlands northwest of the Pheneos plain, and its coinage history is short. The city joined the Arkadian League following the Battle of Leuktra in 371 BC, which is almost certainly what prompted this issue — the brief window of Arkadian political ambition before the League collapsed following Mantinea in 362 BC gives this obol its entire reason for existing as a civic type.
The BCD Peloponnesos specimen, lot 1423 in that landmark 2004 Leu sale, remains the reference piece collectors work from.
