| Reverse description | A boldly rendered barley ear, the civic emblem of Metapontion, occupies the central field with a single leaf extending to the right. The ethnic legend META rises upward along the left side of the stalk, identifying the issuing city. To the right, a plow is depicted above a leaf, with the magistrate's mark MAX positioned below, completing the moneyer's signature. The barley ear motif, a long-standing symbol of Metapontion's agricultural prosperity, is executed with fine detail typical of the late classical period. The overall composition reflects the high artistic standards maintained by the Metapontine mint through the Hellenistic transition. |
