The portraiture displays the characteristic Italiote style of late fourth- to early third-century Metapontine coinage, with carefully articulated facial features and flowing hair. The incuse background is absent in this later series, distinguishing it from the archaic Metapontine tradition. |

Metapontion's agricultural wealth underpinned its coinage for centuries — the city's position in the fertile Basento river valley made it one of the wealthiest of the Achaean colonies in Magna Graecia. By the time this nomos was struck, the city had already survived the catastrophic Athenian defeat in Sicily and the rising pressure of Italic peoples pushing into Lucania. The chronological bracket of this issue overlaps almost exactly with the campaigns of Alexander the Molossian, king of Epirus, who crossed to southern Italy around 334 BC at the invitation of Tarentum and briefly operated across the region before his death in battle at Pandosia around 331 BC.
