Obverse description The tughra of Sultan Mahmud I occupies the central field in bold calligraphic relief, its characteristic looped and elongated strokes rendered in the Ottoman style. A floral or foliate ornament appears to the right of the tughra, serving as a decorative device typical of Egyptian Ottoman coinage of this period. The design is set within a plain circular border, with the overall composition displaying the irregular flan characteristic of hammered billon issues.
