Magnus Maximus seized the western empire by crossing from Britain in 383, forcing Gratian's abandonment and eventual murder near Lyon. His five-year reign required rapid legitimization through coin production at every western mint he controlled, Arelate (modern Arles) among them. The REPARATIO REIPVB type — "restoration of the state" — was a deliberate rhetorical choice, framing a usurper's coup as civic renewal.
RIC IX 26a places this issue firmly within Arelate's first officina output for Maximus. His defeat by Theodosius I at the Battle of the Save in 388 ended production abruptly.
