Within the angles of the cross inside the inner circle, a pellet is placed in each of the four quadrants. Between the arms of the cross in the outer field, alternating annulet and pellet ornaments (⊚ • ⊚) are distributed, adding decorative articulation typical of anonymous Flemish bracteate-influenced small coinage of this period. Oudenaarde's anonymous mailles occupy a poorly documented corner of Flemish medieval numismatics, struck during the contested decades when the county passed through the hands of Philip of Alsace and then Baldwin VIII and Baldwin IX — the latter departing for the Fourth Crusade in 1202, leaving Flemish administration fragmented. Local ecclesiastical and comital mints in this period operated with considerable autonomy, and attribution of anonymous types to specific lords remains disputed among specialists. Ghyssens' classification is the closest thing to consensus.
