Bodawpaya seized the Burmese throne in 1782 after ordering the execution of his nephews and consolidating power under the Konbaung dynasty. His monetary reforms drew deliberately on the iconography of Srikshetra — the ancient Pyu city-state that had collapsed nearly a millennium earlier — as a calculated claim to civilizational continuity and legitimate kingship over a unified Burma. The Pyu themselves had struck silver coins in broadly similar form, making this issue a conscious archaeological reference, not an organic design evolution.
1797 placed the issue squarely in the years following Bodawpaya's catastrophically overextended invasion of Arakan in 1784–85.
